I have stood for hours at the Berkeley Pit viewing stand listening to dads tell moms what the Berkeley Pit "is". Defining a thing, naming a thing reduces it to our own limited perceptions, our own acculturated lens. I created an interactive CD-ROM that explores what the Pit is to 10 scientists who study and try to predict what the pit is and what the pit will do in the future. Perhaps the only way to understand places like this is to interview hundreds of people and ask them what they see.
