Berkeley Pit Viewing Stand

Berkeley Pit with its unique temperature gradients and chemistry generates its own weather. At times the steam lingers for hours fingering over the Pit's lip out onto the streets of Butte. The steam has a unique metalic smell.

The Pit is 1 mile wide, 1.5 miles long and 1800 feet deep.
