The Pit's acidic waters are home for microorganisms know as acidophiles. These organisms can thrive in acid habitats because its cells pump out poisonous hydrogen ions fast enough not to damage the DNA inside the nucleus. The organisms are catalogued and studied for possible pharmaceutical potential.
